PURPOSES:

The purpose of the core is to foster achievement of the specific aims of the other three cores through:

  • Facilitating multicultural awareness and competence in contributing to evidence-based nursing practice among underserved and diverse populations
  • Coordinating the activities of the interdisciplinary Center affiliates in accessing underserved and diverse populations and relevant University resources
  • Monitoring the progress of Center affiliates in their attempts to incorporate multicultural competence in all phases of the research process (from study design to dissemination of findings).

 

ACTIVITIES:

  • Multicultural Advisory Panel to determine research priorities for Underserved Populations
  • Provide individual consultation on cultural relevance and competence
  • Identify experts in cultural competence for consultation with affiliates
  • Assist in adapting research instruments for cultural relevance and competence
  • Evaluate resources for the central Center library

 

UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS DEFINITION

Unserserved Populations are those who experience barriers related to:

  • Access to health care
  • Continuity of care, and/or
  • Suitability of care

    Because of contextual factors such as:

  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Disability
  • Socioeconomic status
  • Life circumstances: Marginalization or Stigmatization

    ...that affect health behaviors and modify ability to utilize or benefit from health services that affect health careoutcomes.
