Report of the Epsilon Theta Chapter Luncheon November 29, 2006 Epsilon Theta is sponsoring two doctoral nursing students with grant funds. The Chapter held a lunch meeting in November at the School of Nursing to hear about the research projects for these two students, Sandra Benavides-Vaello and Mary Beth Thomas. About 30 chapter members and university nursing students attended. While Ms. Thomas was not able to attend, due to a work conflict, information on her research is included below.
From: Sandra Benavides-Vaello Doctoral Candidate The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing Diabetes and related complications is one of the leading causes of death for Mexican American women. Although dietary behavior is a critical component of diabetes management, research is lacking in relation to the interplay of food habits and diabetes among this population. My research focuses on interrelationship of foodways, culture, and diabetes among Mexican American women with type 2 diabetes. The specific aims of my dissertation (which is an ethnographic study) are to: (1) acquire a better understanding of the relationship between culture, food habits, and type 2 diabetes; (2) examine the role that food plays in determining cultural identity; and (3) examine how the relationship between food and culture impacts adherence to a diabetes diet for Mexican American women with type 2 diabetes. This study will involve individual interviews with 15 to 20 participants, analysis of collected data and, the reporting of findings. A better understanding of the relationship between culture, food habits, and illness is in order if researchers are to develop culturally appropriate interventions for Mexican Americans with diabetes.
From: Mary Beth Thomas Doctoral Candidate The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing The purpose of this descriptive, exploratory study is to examine the perceptions of registered nurses (RNs) who have been sanctioned by a board of nursing to ascertain categories of practice errors involved in the event and identify any related individual, health care team, patient and system threats that contributed to the error and/or patient harm. The Threat and Error Management Model (TEMM) will be utilized as a framework for examining the phenomena that promote or hinder patient safety. Using a modified version of the Taxonomy of Error Root Cause Analysis of Practice-Responsibilities (TERCAP) Instrument, sanctioned RNs will review and select pertinent types of errors associated with a breakdown in nursing practice standards. In addition, they will identify factors that contributed to their errors, including individual, health care team, patient and system threats. Associations between the levels of patient harm and types of error will be examined. Understanding the perspective of the nurse involved in the error should provide a close look at the error process and support the development of new knowledge about the multidimensional contributions to errors. I am going to be sending out the surveys in late January 2007. I hope to have all my data in by the end of February 2007 and estimate a defense date this summer. |
